2023 Grantee

Oglala Lakota Cultural and Economic Revitalization Initiative

Addressing the historical and systemic barriers that have impacted the Lakota people, the Oglala Lakota Cultural and Economic Revitalization Initiative is looking to build out and extend existing agriculture production through the use of walipini greenhouses, a traditional method used by their people due to its resistance to the harsh weather climates found in the badlands of South Dakota. There is an understanding in the Lakota community that when basic needs are not met, individuals are stuck in perpetual states of insecurity, poverty, and scarcity making it harder for them to do good by themselves and others. With this in mind OLCERI seeks to increase food production, and extend its existing food network of 180 local gardens aiming for sustainable outcomes for current and future generations.
