2023 Grantee

Kawerak, Inc.

Kawerak, Inc. is a co-managing owner of Unaatuq, a consortium of five Native Corporations and two regional nonprofits, who have come together to revitalize an historic property and establish the only registered farm in a 20,000 square mile area, bringing fresh food to the underserved Bering Strait Region of Alaska. With a mission of respecting the land, cultural heritage, and local people, Unaatuq has retaken the area of Pilgrim Hot Springs, a strategic cultivation zone due to its geothermal resource, under the mission of growing and distributing healthy produce while educating regional residents through a variety of workshops. Support from GROWING JUSTICE will help to expand educational programs and increase their coverage area served.
