The Institute of Afrofuturist Ecology, Inc. is advancing food sovereignty and sustainability by connecting BIPOC-led farms to community-serving institutions, such as schools and healthcare facilities, in the Berkshire Taconic region and New York City. Their Good Food Systems project focuses on creating local and regional food sovereignty by sourcing and distributing nutritious, locally grown food while strengthening partnerships with BIPOC farmers and small food businesses. The Institute is developing a detailed roadmap for program implementation, including an assessment of infrastructure needs such as cold storage refrigeration. The project prioritizes community engagement, working closely with farmers, food producers, and institutional partners such as schools and hospitals to ensure that procurement practices align with the needs of local communities. By addressing barriers to access and expanding market opportunities, the Institute aims to foster economic empowerment, environmental sustainability, and a more resilient food system that benefits marginalized communities and strengthens food sovereignty for all.
