2024 Grantee

Ajo Center for Sustainable Agriculture

The Ajo Center for Sustainable Agriculture (Ajo CSA) is dedicated to advancing food sovereignty and economic resilience within the Tohono O’odham Nation. Through their “Transition from Ajo to Sells” project, they aim to establish a food distribution hub in the Sells District to connect Indigenous farmers with local institutions such as schools, healthcare facilities, and elder care centers. By prioritizing culturally relevant crops like tepary beans and cholla buds, which are naturally suited to the arid climate, Ajo CSA is fostering sustainable agriculture and climate resilience. Their efforts include seed-saving, traditional farming education, and creating equitable procurement pathways that empower Tribal producers, ensuring access to fresh, nutritious foods while supporting community health and economic independence.
