The Seven Seed Sowers Co-op is in the planning phase of a transformative initiative in Dayton, Ohio, focused on establishing a Community/Mid-size Commercial Cannery. This project will provide local farmers, particularly BIPOC producers, with the infrastructure and training needed to create value-added products like jams, sauces, and canned goods, helping to extend the shelf life of produce and reduce waste. During the planning phase, the co-op will focus on conducting a feasibility study, assessing the needs of the community and farmers, and developing a detailed plan for facility design, including cold, frozen, and dry storage, as well as processing capabilities. Additionally, the co-op will develop a comprehensive strategy for GAP Certification training to ensure farmers meet the necessary standards for accessing institutional markets. The planning phase will also include community outreach efforts, stakeholder engagement, and the development of a marketing and outreach plan to promote the cannery and educational programs. This project aims to create an environment that empowers farmers with the tools and resources to succeed while contributing to the local economy. By facilitating access to institutional procurement, the Seven Seed Sowers Co-op is laying the foundation for a more resilient and equitable food system in Dayton.
