The Native Foodways Restoration Alliance (NFRA) is committed to restoring Native food sovereignty in Oklahoma by creating a project plan to train Native growers and seed stewards in traditional agricultural practices and seed preservation techniques. With a focus on revitalizing heirloom Native seed varieties, NFRA aims to increase the capacity for producing culturally significant foods within Tribal communities. Through the development of their pilot program, NFRA will develop a plan to provide specialized training in Native farming methods, preparing participants to grow and steward Native crops and increase seed stock for broader distribution. This program supports food security and sovereignty and creates opportunities for economic empowerment within Native communities. By partnering with organizations like FreshRx Oklahoma, NFRA seeks to connect Native food producers with institutional procurement opportunities, ensuring fair market access for culturally relevant foods while addressing health challenges such as Type 2 diabetes. Through these efforts, NFRA is working to transform the food value chain by strengthening local, Indigenous-led food systems.
