2024 Grantee

Kumano I Ke Ala

Kumano I Ke Ala (KIKA) is a Native Hawaiian-led nonprofit social enterprise dedicated to revitalizing the production of kalo (taro) in Hawaiʻi. Kalo is the traditional staple crop in Hawaiʻi and is a part of Native Hawaiian cultural and spiritual connection to the land. Their “Kalo to Keiki and Kūpuna Project” aims to scale up the production of value-added kalo products such as poi in order to make this indigenous superfood more accessible to vulnerable populations while also contributing to increased regenerative environmental stewardship practices. By modernizing its processing facility and acquiring essential manufacturing equipment, KIKA will increase production capacity and facilitate direct procurement agreements with institutions, supporting local farmers and the local food economy. This project will strengthen the food supply chain for traditional Hawaiian crops, promote food sovereignty, and improve access to culturally significant, healthy foods for Native Hawaiian youth and elders. Through partnerships with organizations like the 30% Project and ʻĀina Aloha Economic Futures, KIKA is fostering a more resilient and equitable food system that honors Native Hawaiian agricultural practices and supports community health and economic growth.
