Immigrant-owned Five Pillars Butchery is completing construction of northern New England’s first exclusively halal, USDA-certified slaughter and processing facility in Unity, ME. Providing a critical link in this supply chain promises to support local and immigrant farmers’ livestock production and further the growth of livestock producer and worker cooperatives, while also satisfying the growing demand for halal meat from immigrant populations and other consumers of culturally significant food.
FPB takes a cooperative approach and utilizes innovative partnerships to strengthen an ethnically and racially diverse food value chain. With partners ranging from BIPOC farmer coops like New Roots to community institutions and start-ups such as Jamal’s Daycare, their work builds power and dignity among not only consumers but also producers.
